2009 Year-end review

It's been almost 7 months since I last created a blog. Didn't really have the urge and energy to write down what's on my mind. But really it's just a habit of being an only child, keeping a lot of things to myself.

Since 2009 is about to end, I want to list down all events that have transpired, which are either memorable is miserable.

1. Joined a videoke contest in the office with Dennis Villanueva. It was really fun since it was the first time that I had to go through a tie-breaker round, not once but twice. Hehe. Dennis and I even have our own strategy in singing the songs when we reached the finals.

2. Had my first project cutover in HP with the mySAP NEA Upgrade and Unicode project. A very long project but it was really worth it. Learned a lot of stuff and also made new friends from other teams.

3. Because of that project ^ I lost 4 pounds in two weeks. Then 2 months later I also lost 4 pounds again. I had been in the 140-pound for the past 4 years and now it's down to 132 for the past 4 months.

4. Was able to have my new wedding ring and new phone. ^_^

5. Had my shortest stint in a project, 2 months.

6. Started playing badminton with Andrew and his friends. Because of that I somehow felt that I have improved my game. Lessened the smashing a bit and I can now pick up the shuttlecock using my racket. Hehe.

7. First time to flunk in an important exam. Mental note, 1st never ever cram study because it truly doesn't fit in my system. 2nd, work pressure and studying don't mix together. I think I've reached the extent of my flexibility.

8. First time to have two anesthesia shots in just one tooth extraction. The tooth was broken down to three pieces for it to be removed. When the effect of the first anesthesia shot was gone, I felt the most terrible headaches everytime the dentist tried to pull the tooth. That's why I asked for a second shot.

9. Gaming - Started playing Fifa 10. Spanish League is down and hoping to complete Barclays(English) Premiere League this week. Also started playing Torchlight. Wondering when's the next time I can play it.

10. MJ died. He died even before I get to master a lot of his moves. Darn. Rest in peace to you King of Pop.

11. Celebrated the first birthday of my daughter, who I'm proud to say looks very much like his father. *ehem* Now, I'm waiting for the time that she can pronounce and call me Daddy. She's not as adventurous (took a long time to confidently walk on her own, unlike her brother) her brother but she loves dancing very much as well.

12. My son had his second birthday. He definitely got the looks from his Mom, but what did he get from me? Attitude and his love for dancing. Hehehe. Oh, and he can talk a lot too. =p

12. Finally started to work on that long term goal. Hopefully things will go smoothly and swiftly.

There are a lot of other things that has happened but these are things that stand out the most. I wonder what 2010 has in store for us. Aside, from the national election. =p

Can't the Holy Week just be slower?

How I wanted Holy Week to have a slow pace. It doesn't feel like it's a long-week partial vacation at all. Anyway, at least I get to spend some time with my wife and kids. Speaking of kids, Joannie or commonly called Jan2x here has really grown bigger since last January. She is so eager to eat now even though she's just five months old. And oh boy does she really know how to brighten up anyone's day with her cute smile and giggles. And did I say she smiles a lot? She smiles even if you don't make any funny faces to her at all. Basta ang masasabi ko lang, nadagdagan na naman ang mga babaeng magpapaiyak sa mga lalaki. Haha!

That's all for now. Next time naman ang kay Myles. Little Joemelle deserves another blog post. Hehe. Ciao!

Changes...

Changes are inevitable. As long as people live, aspire, dream, wish, hope and be a human being, changes will always happen. Some changes show its good outcome immediately. Sometimes its fruits can only be appreciated over a long period of time. But no matter what good things people can get from it, a change will always pose an equal opposite effect. The fear of losing something, the sadness of getting away from your comfort zone and the feeling of being lost or confused, all of which will sink in no matter how solid your spirit is.

In the end, we'll just have to cope with these changes and have the memories of that comfort zone become an inspiration for us to move on to the new challenges that lie ahead of us.

Best sleep

After 36 hours of being awake because of the mySAP NEA Upgrade Project's Cutover, I was able to sleep at 5pm yesterday. I woke up at 4am this morning and I really felt rejuvenated. It was my longest and best sleep for the past 2 years. During the cutover, I kept myself awake during the 36 hour stretch by eating a lot and most of all thanks to my pingpongmates, Gilbert, Edward and Andrew and to Kars and Hani for a mini game (Hani you really deceived me =P).

Looking forward to Cutover 2. =)

New Prince of Tennis

A new series of Prince of Tennis (manga) was released last week. It will not be released on the weekly Shonen Jump Magazine but on Square Square. And so chapters will be released on a monthly basis.

The story starts with the Japan U-17 (under 17) Selection Team Training Camp. Ryoma Echizen just came back from America to join the training camp. His appearance was really flashy. The selection of high school and middle school students were filtered by having them catch at least one of the tennis balls that were dropped from a helicopter. Ryoma took the last tennis ball just when the arrogant high schoolers were about to get the ball.

I hope the series will offer something new in the series aside from the flashy tennis techniques. I wonder if Ryoma still has a room for growth.

Being busy

February was a busy month. It's filled with a mix of project work-related and initiative-related activities. People say that if you don't want to miss someone (or loved ones) you have to make yourself busy. You must do something that will divert your attention. Based from the busy month I had, I can confirm that it's not always true. Like almost everything in the universe, it depends on a lot of factors. For one, the things you're doing will only worsen your homesickness if it reminds you of the people you miss. Your endeavors may immerse your mind into something else but when it's done, you have nothing more to think about but those people you want to be with.

Nevertheless, what matters is that you've become busy for a while to think of something else, to make yourself happy if it's just a few hours or minutes. Those precious brief moments are essential to keep the mind and heart uplifted instead of thinking too much of the things you desired, which will have to wait.

Videoke and Guitar Hero

I love singing as much as I love dancing, but as many people would agree the dancing part of me took all the talent. Last Tuesday, Dennis and I joined the HP Duets elimination in SMPC office. We had two tiebreakers. We felt like screaming instead of singing during those tiebreakers. Haha! But it was fun. The real-time scoring of Magic Sing proved to be hilarious because you get to see how each team matches up with the other when singing the same song. We managed to win it and was able to go the finals last Thursday and there we had our lashing. At least we didn't have an awful judge's score.

Our team had its first console game tournament last night. The games were Guitar Hero and Little Big Planet. I played the drums in Guitar Hero and teamed up with Leks, Loren and Athan. Fortunately, we won the Guitar Hero tournament. ^_^ It has been a while since I last played drum arcade, DTX Mania, in Timezone. It was a good refresher.

25 Random Things

Tagged by Tweety.
Tagging: Lemuel, ADDU batchmates and schoolmates

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

~+~

01. My mother was born in Samar. My father was born in Davao. I was born here in Manila. =)

02. I have loved dancing ever since the first time I heard dance music. My most memorable performance was during my senior year in high school. We joined an inter-school dance competition. We danced Michael Jackson's concert version of his songs (Billy Jean, Dangerous, and a bit of Smooth Criminal)

03. I was a member of the drum & lyre band of my elementary school. I first played the snare drum but I later on took the bass drum even though I'm not qualified in terms of height and body size. Our coach still allowed me because I think there were no other boys who were willing to carry a heavy drum during parades and contests. Haha!

04. I love fruit salad. I always want to have fruit salad especially during my birthday. I love it more when cheese or mango are added to it.

05. I was religious back in high school, I usually attend a mass before going to school since the cathedral was just nearby. I joined a search-in workshop during my senior year and I almost entered the seminary because of that.

06. I love memorizing numbers. I have memorized my TIN, PHilhealth no., SSS no. and credit card nos. (yes, including AMEX and also their CCV nos.). During my sophomore year in high school, I memorized the Asian countries and their capitals and land areas for a history recitation. Good thing I was asked to recite all Asian countries or else it would have been a total waste.

07. I can vividly remember almost all the things that happened in the past. I can remember my surroundings and what had happened as young as 2 years old.

08. My prediction is true, 80% of the time. I joined a quiz bowl back in college wherein the topics which me and my teammates studied were totally different. During the average round, I called the shots for our answers (multiple choice with 4 choices). We scored 8 out of 10. This is also the reason why my wife won't let me speak when I'm about to say something that is yet to happen.

09. I never had an absence in college, except when I participate in an inter-school competition.

10. I got poisoned when I was more than a year old. I ate the chips that fell on the floor where a raid/baygon got spilled. I was rushed to the hospital when my mom noticed that half of my body is paralyzed.

11. I almost had a sibling when I was in grade 1. My mother had a miscarriage during her first trimester. I was crying in the tricycle on the way home from school. I don't think my grandmom, who accompanied me home, saw me crying.

12. I have acquired a liking to spinning things using my hand or finger(s). I learned how to spin a basketball in grade school. I learned how to spin a notebook or any flat object in high school. I learned how to spin a ballpen in college.

13. I was so active in academic and extra-curricular activities in high school. I was the battalion commander of our batch in CAT in high school

14. I love racing and sports video games. I'd still play and sometimes finish an NFS game even if reviews say it sucks. I play Fifa, Madden, NBA 2k9(nba live

15. During my senior year in high school, I joined a search-in seminar and almost entered the seminary.

16. I was religious in high school. I usually attend mass or pass by the church to pray before going to school. There was once when I was able to attend 3 holy masses in a day. One before going to school, two our school's holy mass and three the perpetual help novena mass, which our school was always the sponsor.

17. I was primarily a lector in our school's ministry club. I'm a choir member when not assigned to read.

18. I didn't know that I was actually influencing my high school circle of friends(boys) in to study hard and not to cheat during exam. And I didn't tell them to do it.

19. I love history and science. I used to dream of becoming a scientist or a doctor.

20. My most memorable dance performance in a group happened during my senior year in high school. We joined an inter-school dance contest and won 1st place. We danced the concert edition of Michael Jackson's songs, which includes Billy Jean, Dangerous and a little bit of Smooth Criminal. But my most memorable dance of all is the dance with my wife during our wedding reception.

21. Blue is my favorite color. I have a set of shirts before that were different shades of blue.

22. I love manga and anime. I was into anime back in high school and college. My manga addiction started in college. I even memorized some anime soundtracks

23. I have lived in the three major islands of the Philippines. 8 years in Manila, 8 years in Digos City, Davao del Sur, 4 years in Davao, 1 year in Cebu and 2 years and counting in Meycauayan.

24. I never had the chance to know my father very well. He resigned from his work in Saudi and brought us to Digos City. 1 year and a half after we transferred and exactly 8 days after my 10th birthday, he died in a vehicular accident. I didn't cry when I saw his body in the hospital. I only cried when he was buried. But ever since that day, I cry or get teary-eyed whenever I think and remember him because I want to know him not just through what my relatives tell me about him.

25. I have a liking to spinning objects with my hand or fingers. I learned how to spin a basketball back in elementary using all my fingers from both hands. I learned how to spin a binder/notebook or any flat object in high school. I learned how to spin a ballpen clockwise and counter-clockwise, but I first learned how to spin it with many rotations.

Mystery Case Files

My wife and I spent a couple of our free time (when the kids are asleep) playing the Mystery Case Files games by BigFish. It's a hidden object-type of game where you play as a detective and try to search for clues (the objects) in different places and when you found the number of clues required, you'll solve a puzzle. We were able to finish the Prime Suspect, Ravenhearst and Madame Fate.

In the Prime Suspect game, you are tasked to find the suspect for the robbery of the diamond owned by the Queen of England. In the Ravenhearst, you are invited by the Queen to solve the mystery of the Ravenhearst manor. Madame Fate would have seemed to be a different case, however, when we finished the game it's still connected with the Ravenhearst and so it leads to another game called The Return to Ravenhearst, which we haven't played yet. There's a Huntsville game which was the first of these games I believe but there were some problems with my copy so we weren't able to finish it.

It's a fun game. It can exercise not just your brain and eyes but also your time management and decision-making skills. It's one of the few games and the first pc game that my wife and I enjoyed playing together. =)
